The operation was massive;
designed to give new life
to the old lady.
We have cleaned out
her arteries, removed
created a by-pass
for the old blood
Now you can hardly tell

The old lady is the personification of the Singapore river in this poem, aptly used due to the rapid growth of Singapore at that time which led to its deteriorating state.
The word “operation” is used previously used in conjunction to form an analogy where the old lady needs to be saved.
